Last week, we kicked off our festival by getting all our MAKE SPACE! artists under one roof!
If you’ve been following us on social media, scouring our website, or checking the notice boards out the front of Bubble HQ, you’ve probably noticed the arrival of something that we’re very excited about, not only because it’s a London Bubble first, but also because of the gleaming new talent we have the honor of producing over the coming weeks.
“MAKE SPACE!” is our festival that will be taking place from the 25th of October all the way through to the 29th of November. Every Friday evening, the work of 18–30-year-old artists will be hitting the stage for the first time ever.
But why the title “MAKE SPACE!”, you ask? Here at London Bubble, we’ve noticed a lack of opportunities for young theatre-makers to get their work in front of an audience, and since our mission is to bring theatre by anyone to everyone, we’ve decided to lift the barriers, be they financial, social, or age related, and make space for the young voices that should be heard. No gatekeepers here, people!
So, what do these artists have to say?
Perhaps, a better question is what don’t they have to say? Their plays range from the comforting to the complex, from fairytale forests to Eritrean dining rooms, from the joys of a home-cooked meal to the gnarly jumps of parkour. They’ll be asking a multitude of questions, such as, “What does it mean to truly accept a loved one?” and “Wait, actually, why can’t we just print more money?”
If it sounds good on paper, just imagine the joy in the room when they met for the first time last week. Drinks and food were shared around, as well as questions, ideas, and hopes for each project. We bounced around ideas for staging and lighting, from the real to the surreal and everything in- between, and we got an idea of what questions we’ll be asking our artists when we finally get to interview them one on one. We couldn’t have asked for a better first meeting, and we certainly all walked away inspired by the passion that these early-career artists have for their craft. We can’t wait to share it with you all!
Take it from us, if you come to watch these shows, you’ll one day be bragging to your friends about how you saw them first!
Aligning with our mission to make theatre as accessible as possible, tickets for this festival are free! There are no excuses for not making space (sorry, couldn’t resist!) in your calendar.
The shows will take place every Friday at 7:30pm here at London Bubble, just click here to book!
